Requiem

Is Requiem really a musical? I tend to think of it in terms of a contemporary classical piece.

Similarly, Leonard Bernstein's Mass is also in the database. But Bernstein's is subtitled "A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players, and Dancers." I don't believe Lloyd Webber's Requiem was ever intended for the popular stage.

Mass might be in a theatre soon

Actually it played a short run at the Palace in the early 80s coupled with Variations. I think it played between the closing of On Your Toes and the opening of Les Misérables.

That doesn't make it a musical. That makes it a mass sung in a theater.

'Requiem' was a break for Webber after writing both Cats and Starlight Express. It was his way of stepping away from musicals for a moment. I guess writing about dancing felines and singing trains, one needs to go back to church. I would agree it's a contemporary classical piece.

Just to comment on Mass: It was staged in its first production, was always intended to be staged, and is definitely closest to a musical theater piece in many ways. It's really an amalgam of all kinds of things, but my opinion is that it definitely belongs here.

In contrast, I do not think that Requiem belongs in this database.
